Professional Guitar Shipping Guide
Safe guitar shipping requires proper packing techniques. We provide FREE professional shipping and packing when you sell to us, but this guide helps if you need to ship your guitar yourself. First, make sure you have professional photos documenting your guitar's condition.
Why Professional Packing Matters
Prevent Damage
Improper packing causes thousands of dollars in damage annually. Necks break, finishes crack, and hardware fails without proper protection.
Insurance Coverage
Shipping companies require professional packing for insurance claims. Poor packing voids coverage even with insurance.
Peace of Mind
Proper packing ensures your valuable vintage guitar arrives safely. One mistake can destroy decades of careful preservation.
⚠️ Important Shipping Warning
Never ship a guitar in its case alone! Guitar cases are NOT adequate protection for shipping. A proper shipping box with padding is essential to prevent damage during transport.
Guitar Packing Instructions
Preparation Steps
- Loosen strings: Reduce string tension to prevent neck stress during shipping
- Remove strap: Guitar straps can cause finish damage during transport
- Secure loose items: Wrap capos, tools, bridge covers, and tremolo arms in newspaper and place in secure bags inside case compartment
- Remove endpin: Unscrew and wrap the strap button, place in case storage compartment
Packing Inside the Case
Goal: Keep guitar snug but not tight. Prevent movement without applying pressure.
- Use paper towels only: Fold and place around sides, top, and neck. Never use bubble wrap or peanuts inside case
- Support headstock: Place paper towels under headstock so it doesn't rest on case bottom
- Pad around neck: Fill empty spaces along neck sides with crumpled paper towels
- Bridge area: Place crumbled paper towels on top of bridge area
- Case compartment: Add paper on top of storage lid to prevent opening during shipping
Electric Guitar Additional Steps
- Bridge covers: Remove any loose bridge covers, wrap and bag them
- Tremolo arm: Remove if possible, or move down over tremolo unit and wrap with paper
- Toggle switches: Move to down position and pad with paper towels
- Bridge/tailpiece: Pad around hardware to prevent movement off posts
- Floating bridges: Remove all bridge pieces, wrap and bag for case storage
- Elevated pickguards: Support with folded paper towels underneath

Common Shipping Mistakes to Avoid
Case-Only Shipping
Never ship just in the case. Cases protect against minor bumps but aren't designed for shipping forces.
Poor Internal Padding
Insufficient padding inside case allows guitar to move and impact case walls during transport.
Wrong Packing Materials
Bubble wrap can react with vintage finishes. Hard materials can create pressure points and cause damage.
Inadequate Box Padding
Insufficient padding around case allows movement inside shipping box, leading to impact damage.
